Rockville Centre Lifts Ban After Residents Complain
ROCKVILLE CENTER, N.Y. (CBS)The controversial Rockville Centre ordinance banning two breeds of dogs has been suspended – at least for now.Hundreds of people turned out at Rockville Centre Village Hall Tuesday night, urging local leaders to repeal the ban on pit bills and Rottweilers.
The ban went into effect three weeks ago.
Newsday reports the village board, facing intense opposition and questions about legality, voted unanimously in favor of the suspension.
The Mayor says the ban was a result of neighborhood complaints. "The reason we passed this law was to protect the safety of our residents, many of whom have felt threatened by animals of these breeds and asked us to do something about them," Rockville Center Mayor Mary Brossart said.
Rockville Centre's mayor says a public hearing on the pet ban ordinance will be held July 20th.

I thought Obama passed a LAW you can NOT ban a breed of dog, only each dog individually for being an aggressive dog!

What IDIOTS! STUPID PEOPLE who think a whole population should be banned solely because of their own LACK OF UNDERSTANDING AND COMPETENCE regarding them should be banned instead! It is not MY pit bull's fault that SOME IRRESPONSIBLE OWNER'S DOG has attacked. Please, PLEASE PEOPLE do your homework and research breed history and understand that the cause of aggression is poor breeding or poor ownership - not a breed name. Many people think that because pit bulls were bred as fighting dogs, that this makes them human aggressive - when in reality there is NO CORRELATION between human aggression and dog aggression. They were bred to fight DOGS. In fact, had they not been bred this way, we wouldn't have the LOYAL, LOVING, HUMAN FRIENDLY breed we have today. It is called selective breeding. Human friendliness was a VERY desirable trait when these dogs were developing and being bred to fight. But of course, now you have every Joe Schmoe and Sally Sue down the street who think they are qualified to breed dogs and those are the people who do not understand genetics and who are RUINING this breed. If idiots want a mean dog, they will make one, REGARDLESS of breed. Breed bans are ineffective and anyone who advocates them is S-T-U-P-I-D and obviously can't use a logical thought process. If people would PROPERLY educate themselves about the breed, there would not be so much controversy and mass hysteria. When you form your total opinion on something, should you not recognize the FACTS surrounding it? And people FAIL to realize that MEDIA BIAS is a huge factor in why people are lead to think "pit bulls" are "killers". Do some research. Idiots.

To "Dog Behaviorist". I couldn't have said it better. Ignorance is a very dangerous thing! If anybody wants to get educated on this, then look up what happened to Michael Vick's pit bulls and how they were rehabilitated, especially by Best Friends, an animal rescue organization located in Utah. Read about how these dogs were tortured and abused and how most of them have, with a lot of love and patience to be well-mannered and gentle dogs. Like "Dog Behaviorist" said, GET EDUCATED!

I am so glad to hear the ban has been lifted. What a dumb law it was. You can't just put a blanket over the problem and punish everybody for a few bad apples ... or dogs in this case.
People, like the others above, please help educate others and save all our dogs.
